The FCS football landscape has seen significant changes through major conference realignment heading into the 2024 season, with teams shifting between conferences. Several teams have moved up to the FBS level, including James Madison, Sam Houston, Delaware, Kennesaw State, and Missouri State, while others have joined the FCS from Division II, such as Texas A&M-Commerce, Lindenwood, and Stonehill. Conferences like the ASUN and WAC are also merging to form a football-only conference. Conference winners in the FCS receive automatic bids to the 24-team playoffs, but a minimum of six eligible teams is required for a conference to be eligible for an automatic bid.
In terms of changes within the FCS, Stephen F. Austin, Richmond, Sacred Heart, Merrimack, Robert Morris, Western Illinois, and Bryant have all made conference moves. Murray State and North Carolina A&T have also left their respective conferences for new ones. Campbell, Austin Peay, UIW, Lamar, Southern Utah, Monmouth, and Hampton have been involved in conference switches as well. These changes have reshaped the FCS football landscape, setting the stage for an exciting and competitive upcoming season.
