Senior Hezbollah commander killed; group retaliates with rocket attack on Israel

Lebanese militant group Hezbollah retaliated against Israel by firing over 200 rockets at Israeli military facilities after the killing of one of its senior commanders, Muhammad Na’ima Nasser. The Israeli military confirmed they had eliminated Nasser, accusing him of directing terror attacks towards Israel. After Hezbollah’s initial attacks, the IDF struck back and evacuated 60,000 people from northern communities.

The conflict between Hezbollah and Israel has escalated, with Hezbollah using increasingly sophisticated weapons and Israel threatening to invade Lebanon. The International Organization for Migration reported that around 74,500 people have been displaced on the Lebanese side. This comes as fears grow that the conflict could spread along Israel’s northern border, as the war in Gaza continues with over 1,200 people killed.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will convene his security cabinet to discuss Hamas’ response to a cease-fire proposal for Gaza. Both sides have struggled to reach a long-term agreement, with Netanyahu vowing to continue the war until Hamas is completely defeated. Hamas, on the other hand, has stated they will not stop fighting until there is a permanent cease-fire and Israel withdraws fully from Gaza. The conflict in Gaza has left nearly 38,000 people dead, while the fighting between Hezbollah and Israel raises concerns of further escalation in the region.
