Norfolk Naval Shipyard highlights latest ship repair and maintenance technologies at second annual Technology Showcase in Quarterdeck

Norfolk Naval Shipyard (NNSY) recently hosted its second annual Technology Showcase, featuring over 50 vendors displaying products and providing demonstrations to the workforce. Shipyard Commander Captain Jip Mosman emphasized the need for efficient and effective work to meet the Navy’s increased demand for maintenance and repairs.

The vendors presented a range of technologies aimed at supporting shipyard operations, with a focus on enhancing mechanics’ productivity. Mechanics like Casey Pearce and Donovan Beale highlighted the benefits of products such as laser ablation and 3D printing in their daily work.

The event also showcased the importance of on-time delivery of repaired ships and submarines to the Navy’s nuclear fleet, with the new technologies playing a crucial role in achieving this mission. Norfolk Naval Shipyard Innovation and Technology Insertion Division Head Matt DeLong emphasized the importance of integrating these technologies into the shipyard’s operations.

“This year’s Technology Showcase was a great success,” said Norfolk Naval Shipyard Business Process Consultant Lead Thomas Staskin. “The information and products displayed can greatly benefit our workforce and ultimately contribute to our mission success.” Mechanics like Pearce and Beale encouraged more people to attend the event in the future to learn about and leverage the latest technologies.

Looking ahead, the Technology Showcase is set to continue to be a valuable platform for collaboration between vendors and the shipyard workforce in meeting the evolving needs of ship repair and maintenance.
