McDonald’s adjusts breakfast hours in Australia due to egg shortage across the country

Australia is currently facing an egg supply shortage due to outbreaks of the avian influenza virus, leading to the euthanization of approximately 1 million affected hens. As a result, McDonald’s has decided to trim its breakfast hours by 90 minutes, serving breakfast only until 10:30 a.m. temporarily due to industry challenges. Supermarkets have also implemented limits on the number of egg cartons consumers can purchase, with Coles and Woolworths restricting transactions to two cartons per customer.

The Australian government has assured consumers that there is no impact on chicken meat supply at the moment, but there have been outbreaks of the H7 avian influenza at 11 poultry farms. Despite the challenges faced by the poultry industries, Australian Eggs’ managing director has expressed confidence that farmers are working diligently to ensure a continued supply of eggs for consumers.

Food Standards Australia New Zealand has emphasized that avian influenza is not a food safety concern and that properly handled and cooked chicken meat, eggs, and egg products are safe to consume. The organization also noted that there is currently no evidence to suggest that the virus can be contracted through food preparation. Overall, while the egg supply crunch in Australia is causing disruption, efforts are being made to address the issue and ensure that eggs remain available to consumers.
