A performance of the Broadway musical “Suffs,” which highlights the suffragist movement, was briefly disrupted by protesters advocating for racial inclusivity. The demonstrators unfurled a banner with the slogan “Suffs Is a White Wash” and chanted “Cancel ‘Suffs!'” The protest lasted for only 20 seconds before the protesters were escorted out by theater staff.
The show’s producers, including Hillary Clinton, assured that the safety of the cast and audience was not compromised during the incident. The musical addresses the role of racism in the suffragist movement and celebrates the contributions of Black women to the voting rights cause.
This disruption marks the second incident at a Broadway show in less than four months, following a protest during a performance of “An Enemy of the People.” Theater staff swiftly handled the situation, and the show continued without further disruptions.
While the creators of “Suffs” did not directly address the protesters’ concerns, the musical aims to shed light on the complexities of feminism and racial equality. The group behind the protest described themselves as “radical, anti-racist, queer feminists” and criticized the musical for perpetuating “white feminism.” Despite the brief interruption, “Suffs” continues to be a Tony Award-winning production that challenges audiences to think critically about the history of suffrage and intersectional feminism.
